Text-to-speech provides a literate device user the ability to type any novel message and speak it out loud. Persona is ZYGO's own software program which turns the new Persona Mobile Smartphone PDA into a great text-to-speech voice output system. Our Polyana's and PolyTABLET have their own version of the program, but both versions have all the qualities of the original.

Beyond spelling letter by letter, there are many speed enhancement features which can drastically improve upon the time it takes to get your messages out. Use the detachable, magnetic keyboard or touch screen with on-screen keyboard to compose a message to be spoken.

Word Prediction

Word prediction will appear as the top row of the keyboard, just below the main text box, or just below the main text box and above the main menu if you are using the detachable, magnetic keyboard. Select the desired word by touching it on the screen in the predicted word list. Selecting predicted words from the list reduces keystrokes while typing. The Persona program learns from your typing and offers words that you have used before.

Abbreviation / Expansion (AbEx)

Store your own acronyms that you use frequently so you can type out entire phrases with a minimum of keystrokes. These are short cuts to phrases you use often. Persona can learn an acronym and expand it out to a phrase for you. For example, you might use "cc" to expand out to "May I please have a cup of coffee?", or "mn" to expand out to "My name is Doug."

Speech Exceptions (SpEx)

Not all the words we spell sound the way we would want to say them. Train Persona to pronounce certain words or proper names phonetically so that they sound better to you.

Stored Phrases in Phrase Bank

To select a stored message or to add a new phrase to the library, press the Phrases button on the menu row at the bottom of the screen. Choose a Category from the left column, or show All phrases wtih the All button on the menu row. Select (highlight) the message you want to speak, and press the Speak button on the menu row at the bottom of the screen.

Store your frequently used phrases and speak from the list. Create categories to group messages by topic.

Dialogue Scripts

Prepare for future conversations or save what you have said during a conversation. You can prepare a dialogue for a conversation you are going to have and save it for later. Type out your side of a future conversation. Then go into the File menu in the bottom row on the screen and Save the script as a file.

For example, if you know that you are going to see your best friend, type out greetings for when they arrive, questions about them, stories about what is going on with you, or whatever you want to talk about. Save the entire conversation as "Visit with Marie". Then when Marie arrives, go into the File menu, Open the Marie file, and speak the sentences you have prepared. You can always type more during the conversation, and add thoughts you hadn't saved yet.

Short Messaging Service (SMS)

Selecting the Recipients for SMS.

With a SIM card installed, it is possible for Persona Mobile to send short text messages to a cell phone. You need to have an established cellular service plan with a carrier that uses SIM cards, like ATT and T-Mobile. Open the SMS Send screen from the Persona Mobile Main menu by choosing Tools and then SMS Send.

From the SMS screen choose a recipient and type a message up to 160 characters long. Tap the Send button to send the message to the recipient. A message box will appear after a few seconds indicating whether or not the message was sent successfully. New Recipients can be added to the Recipient drop-down list by selecting Recipient and then New from the menu. Similarly, a recipient's name and cell phone number can be edited by selecting Recipient and then Change.

Persona for Persona Mobile is provided with high quality NeoSpeech in male and female American English voices. NeoSpeech is also available on our Polyana-JT for a more natural sounding voice.
