NOTE: After completing all of the steps in any of the following questions and answers, make sure to return your unit to PLAY MODE.

 1. How do I record a level?

  • Switch the MACAW into RECORD MODE.
  • Press function key f•4 (SET LEVEL). You'll hear two beeps.
  • Press a white message key as your level key. For example; to choose level 1, press message key number 1.
  • If you need to have any key pattern other that 32 keys, you may select it now. Press function key f•5 (SELECT MODE).
  • Choose a key pattern by pressing any of the message keys1-6.
  • Record your messages by holding down a message key and speaking in the microphone. Remember that in enlarged-key patterns you need to record in the upper left hand corner of the enlarged key.

 2. How do I record a second level?

  • Switch the MACAW into RECORD MODE.
  • Please follow the steps described in the previous question. This time choose another message key as your level key. For example to choose level 2, press message key number 2.

 3. How do I change levels?

There are three ways to change levels:

Method 1:

  • Switch MACAW to RECORD MODE.
  • Press the function key f•4 (SET LEVEL).
  • Press the message key number that was originally chosen as your level key. For example, to change to level 1, press message key 1.

Method 2: Dual-key level selection

Note: If you are choosing this method to change levels, make sure that message key number 32 (SELECT LEVEL) has been activated. To activate; switch the unit into RECORD MODE, press function key f•5 (SELECT MODE), then press SELECT LEVEL key. You should hear 4 beeps, if you heard two beeps then you had already activated this function and you just deactivated it.

  • While in PLAY MODE, press SELECT LEVEL key, message key number 32 in a MACAW 3, and message key number 128 in MACAW GREEN.
  • Next, press the level key, that you had chosen earlier.

Method 3: Single-key level selection

Note: If you are choosing this method to change levels, you must first activate this function. To activate; switch the unit into RECORD MODE, then press the function key f•4 (SET LEVEL) followed by function key f•1 (SET VOLUME). Choosing this method will not allow you to record a message under the same key number. e.g. level 1 will not have any messages under message key number 1. To deactivate; in RECORD MODE, press the function key f•4 (SET LEVEL) followed by f•10 (MOVE).

  • While in play mode, press the level key number that you had selected earlier, e.g. key 1 for level 1. You will hear the MACAW beep. This automatically changes your level to the one you just selected.

 4. Some of my messages appear to be getting cut off?

  • Try EXTEND RECORDING.
    • In RECORD MODE, press function key f•5 (SELECT MODE) followed by the EXTEND RECORDING key; key number 28 in a MACAW 3, and key number 116 in a MACAW GREEN.
    • Now, record as usual. EXTEND RECORDING needs to be done for each key that isn't providing enough recording time.
  • Make certain that the MACAW is fully charged. On a MACAW 3, it is possible to check the battery level.

 5. The MACAW is no longer allowing me to record?

  • Check to make sure that you're recording properly.
  • It is possible that you're out of recording time. On MACAW II, it will beep 5 times and on MACAW 3 it is possible to check the recording time available to you.
  • Your battery may need to be replaced. This is usually done every 1-3 years.

 6. Some of my keys are recording okay while others are not!

  • Some keys may have been hidden. To unhide a hidden message, in RECORD MODE, press the function key f•3 (HIDE / FIND). The FIND ALL function (f•1) will reactivate all hidden messages.
  • Try to record using EXTEND RECORDING.
  • Bringing the unit to factory defaults is another option. In record mode, press function key f•5 (SELECT MODE) followed by f•9 (RECORD). All of the functions that you have had changed, are now changed back to factory settings. You will need to SET them AGAIN. Also the factory default is 32 key pattern. You may need to have to change your levels to their correct key pattern.

 7. Some of my keys do not sound very clear?

  • On a MACAW II, you may have selected EXTENDED PLAY. This will allow more recording time with less clear sound quality. Pressing function key f•5 (SELECT MODE), key number 27 and then function key f•2 (COPY) will put your unit in EXTENDED PLAY mode. Pressing function key f•5 (SELECT MODE), key number 27 and then function key f•1 (SET VOLUME) will put your unit in HIGH QUALITY mode.
  • It's possible that your finger, several overlays, etc. are covering the microphone during recording.

 8. My MACAW is dead and there are no lights and no beeps?

  • If you have charged the unit fully and it doesn't work without the charger being plugged in, you may be due for a possible battery replacement. Otherwise, a new charger may need to be purchased. Please call the Customer Service for further assistance.
  • If the unit is between 1-3 years old, and you haven't had the battery replaced yet, this may be the time to do that.
  • When you plug the charger in, does the green light(s) come on? If not, you need to replace your charger.
  • To reset the unit, push the reset hole located on the back of a MACAW II and on the right side of a MACAW 3.
  • ONLY on MACAW 3 series, you may turn the unit off then back on. On MACAW II this will result in the loss of all your messages.
