Operating
Controls
The following multi-switch arrays
are available to achieve the four roller movement functions:
- HK-4 Short-throw Joystick with mounting hardware suitable for
hand, foot, or chin actuation.
- SB-4 Sip-and-Puff Control with mounting hardware requires two
levels of intensity (mild and moderate) for both sipping and
puffing to actuate the four roller functions.
- FK-4F Pedal Control requires minimum deflection of individual
pedals.
- FK-4H Push-button Control has four individual recesses of 3/4"
(19 mm) diameter for finger or pointer apparatus selection.
- CM-50-A Slot Control with
Call Signal has five
rugged, deeply recessed tread switches (four for roller movement
and one for the call signal) suitable for persons having gross
hand or foot movement which requires the deeper recesses for
stabilization.
SCANNING - Single Switch
Use
The SC-1 Scanning Controller
is provided with adhesive-backed Velcro® strips for mounting
it to the center of the upper housing of the Page Turner as shown.
Retaining clips are provided to dress connecting cables neatly
away from the box to the side of the Page Turner.
The Sc-1 Scanning Controller
allows single-switch users to access this valuable device. Profoundly
handicapped users relate to the four-position roller movement
by watching the Scanner. When the LED (Light Emitting Diode)
corresponding to the desired roller function illuminates, the
user actuates an appropriate single switch to initiate the function.
For more information on switches,
adaptive fixtures, and mounting systems,
see Tools of the Trade.
The SC-1 has two modes of operation
determined by a pushbutton at the side of the unit.
MOMENTARY Mode:
In this mode the user must maintain switch closure for
the duration of the roller function. On release, the roller stops
and LED scanning resumes. A fifth LED allows the user to turn
the Scanner off when not in use.
- Auto-Standby: Scanning will cease automatically after
about two minutes of switch inactivity. The next switch activation
will reinstate the scan.
LATCHING Mode:
For persons who are motorically less able, this mode allows one
switch activation to start the roller function and a second switch
activation to stop it. The first switch action "locks in"
roller movement which continues until the second actuation stops
it.

Special Considerations |
|
Maintenance |
- The GEWA BLV-6 comfortably accommodates
materials up to 2" (50mm) in spine thickness. Securing some
of the pages under the inner plastic panels will allow some thicker
books to be handled in sections.
- We suggest that the most cost-effective
solution to accessing thicker reference texts, directories, epic
sagas, bibles, etc., is to have them rebound into thinner volumes.
|
|
- The rubber roller should be
cleaned at about every 1,000 pages or whenever it appears shiny.
Cleaning will remove the ink and paper residue which, over time,
reduces the friction needed to grip pages properly. Reasonable
cleaning agents include alcohol swaps, turpentine, and commercially
available spray cleaners. IMPORTANT: Do NOT use solvents that
may adversely attack the plastic panels.
